"And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul." 1 Samuel 18:1 KJV
Being knit together in love with one another is a great privilege. We can all say the relationship Jonathan had with David is a rare one. God did it. Grace enabled it.
"For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Colossians 2:1-3 ESV
Face to face love should come easy to a believer in Christ. In an atmosphere of love, mercy and forgiveness we can love one another.
Hidden in Christ is a deeper love than that. We love the person we do not see. The ones we have met and God has knit our hearts together with and those we have not yet met but long for because God longs for them and our love is intertwined with His love.
This past week our Church had a great meeting where people came from all over the World and great grace was given to us to receive and fellowship. I saw barriers go down between people in profound ways. Barriers of distance and spiritual, emotional and intellectual barriers as well. The face to face love was poured out.
Now on my way down from the mountaintop and into the valleys of life I want to let that love that I was soaked in really knit me together with people through prayer remembrance and action as God leads through the year to connect and be involved in the lives of the ones I love.
Together we can 'reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.'
Just as David saw God in Jonathan's love. We can love one another this way. Yes, It is a rare love... but we have a God who can make the rare multiply in our lives.
