Let Us Be Bereans

Ever go down a doctrinal detour? I have gone down many only to find a dead end.

"The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so." - Acts 17:10-11 ESV

Tasty tidbits. We want some things to be true but when we look at the scriptures that is when we really find out what is what.

I spent an hour this morning looking at scriptures someone quoted to promote a certain idea and came away finding out that this person's idea didn't have scriptural traction. It relied on a nuance for a word used in the King James Version translation but the Greek didn't bear out that nuance.

It isn't uncommon.

Folks read their Bible and come to wrong conclusions because they have no, or very limited, knowledge of the original languages that the scriptures were written in. Then they go off on doctrinal detours that lead to spiritual dead ends that turn the focus away from Jesus and the Gospel of Grace.

Let's be Bereans. Not so we can argue and be hyper-intellectual. The Bible should bring us somewhere. Jesus should be visible in His magnificence. We should look and see a white harvest field if the truth is presented.

My time this morning was well spent. Now I can turn the page and move on.
