I am reading Isaiah 58 again and again and thinking about the rhythms and step by step processes we can fall into as people.
Food isn't the problem. Having food and water is a blessing that many live without. God wants broken chains. Not appearances or expectations based on merit.
Listen with me...
"Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.
'Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?'
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, 'Here I am.' If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in. If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken." - Isaiah 58:2-14 ESV
Wow.
Some shocking promises there.
Fasting is ingenious really because it is a struggle to refrain from something very basic and fundamental. Israel had learned to fast as a religious practice but that was not impressive to God. They turned a 'don't' into a 'do' and then judged God based on the results.
I sit here being bathed in grace thinking, 'What needed to be done has been done. God, I want to fast from my rigid cycles. Help me. Change me.'
How quickly we return to snacking on our old thinking.
No. I want to take my food and give it away instead. I want to look for a way to free someone from the trap they are in. The void needs to be filled but let the step by step process fall away... just for a moment... just for today. I want to live in grace now because now is all I really have.
Then when we face God the merit system is dissolved and communion is fresh and free. Jesus has fulfilled all that needed to be done. God Is with us and we are with God not demanding anything. The sun comes up and our gloom turns into noonday brightness.

Uninterrupted Renewal
This morning I was thinking of the little things that steal our joy when it is supposed to be a time of joy.
"HER BROTHERS
Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards, for our vineyards are in blossom.
THE SHULAMITE WOMAN
My beloved is mine, and I am his; he grazes among the lilies." - Song of Songs 2:15-16 ESV
The Song of Solomon is an amazing unique book. It is all about the marital union But it is also about our relationship with God.
Here is a very broad progression of the book
1:1 - 3:5 Falling in Love
3:6 - 5:1 The Wedding and Marriage
5:2 - 7:10 The Struggles of Love
7:11f Growing in Love
This love has cycles. We love but then our love is renewed again and again as it deepens. The brothers represent the spectators to the intimacy process but they also speak of our 'detached self'... the part of us that views and critiques the situation with detachment.
The details of life (the little foxes) can interrupt our love affair with God if we get distracted by them. The brothers are saying, 'Hey, I know you have a boyfriend but we have vines to worry about here. Get your head out of the clouds. We have issues to deal with now in this season of life.'
The Shulamite is focused on the character of her lover and is occupied with possessing him and the fact that he wants to possess her.
This season can be a season filled with 'little foxes that spoil the vines' but it is meant to be a season of renewed love.
If our focus is right then doubts and details don't have to ruin our love affair with God. Jesus was born in a manger 2,000 years ago. He came and died on a cross because He wanted to possess us and woo us in a permanent union.
Let's draw near to where God Is. He is with His flock among the lilies. He is walking with His disciples near the sea of Galilee teaching and laughing and healing people where ever He goes.
God, Some of us need a time of renewal. We need a time of love and the renewal of love. Give us eyes to see in the midst of the details of life. We worship You. Thank You. We are so blessed that you want us. Teach us to put our inner critic in its place as we command our souls to rejoice in the Lord.

Defrauding and Taking A Stand - Colossians - Part 49
"Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind," - Colossians 2:18 NASB
Very interesting study this morning.
If you have ever read 'The Screwtape Letters' you know what it's like to march through the muck of evil. I liked that book but I had to keep putting it down and coming back to it because you can only handle evil's perspective for so long before needing a shower.
Passages like these are that for me. I don't gravitate towards them. I'd rather talk about hope, grace and mercy but then I do a study like this that is systematic and I can't avoid the mud puddle. The boots go on and right through the center I go.
The unique Greek words here are katabrabeuĊ (Strong's G2603), translated here as 'keep defrauding' and embateuĊ (Strong's G1687) translated 'taking his stand' and they are actions that are continuous. The person in evil keeps defrauding, in part, because they keep taking a stand on what they see. Natural evaluation causes a vicious circle. Faith makes an entrance and an exit but walking by sight always cycles a person into a deficit. People become takers because they 'worship angels' and walk by sight. They deprive themselves and then deprive others in the name of what is good but it isn't God's good.
That word 'visions' is thrown in there making it seem spiritual but in the Greek it just means 'things seen' that inflate the mind. Communism was such a concept. Large groups imbraced an artificial system that they thought would better mankind but it brought destruction. People 'saw' a coming eutopia but it was a mirage based on natural reasoning.
It is amazing how wrong smart people can be. This year I am amazed again about how wrong so called experts have been about so many things.
God's mind is proven.
"For no word from God will ever fail." - Luke 1:37 NIV
(translated 'For with God nothing shall be impossible' in the KJV but it actually says the Rhema of God will accomplish it's purpose)
The God of all grace isn't going to defraud you. Jesus' Father is that God. The God of men's philosophies is a pale comparison to this glorious person. The Father can only be known through the Son. If there is no Jesus at the center of the concept it can't be trusted. It is just fruit from the tree or the knowledge of good and evil and that has proven to be a deadly place to get nourishment.

The New Moon - Colossians - Part 48
"He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ." - Colossians 2:15-17 ESV
The Hapax Legomenon (unique word) here is 'new moon'. The Hebrew calendar is a lunar calendar and worship was on a lunar schedule.
Festival, New Moon and Sabbath = Recreation, Cycles (or marking the passage of time) and Rest
"And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD." - Isaiah 66:23 KJV
"Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons." - Ezekiel 46:3 KJV
These two passages are prophetic in nature. Many people don't mark the passage of time by worship.
At the time this is written we are closing out a month and will soon begin another. What does that mean to us?
I often look at the month coming before it arrives. I look at my birthday list and pray. I think about appointments. I gauge needs. I pay or mentally put aside money for bills that come in monthly cycles.
My devotional life is a portal into worship. It isn't me trying to better myself. It is the exploration of God's mind.
Oppression leaves a depression that is painful. An oppressor seek to exploit and to do that he or she must isolate, accuse and gain dependency. To do that integrity must be destroyed so that accusation will be internalized and isolation will be reinforced. Then exploitation can continue.
A worshipper can't be isolated. God is there. A worshipper knows accusations can't isolate unless they are internalized.
If worship has been disqualified in our lives we have believed a lie. It might be a lie about God or about ourselves... or both. It takes humility to worship. Lets humble ourselves and enter in by faith. God's light will banish the darkness. His Word will be a light for our path and a lamp for our feet on the path that echoes with praise.
In God's economy of grace we are not in bondage. We are not forced to regulate ourselves (or others) in recreation or rest. We each mark the passage of time differently and our emphasis may be different. In truth, from God's perspective, the substance of these things rests in Christ. When He becomes the focus then worship is incorporated into our cycles and our Sabbath.

Regret What Is Broken Or Embrace Newness By Grace
Regret is a thief that is powerless to fix what is broken. Fallen man breaks more things by trying to make broken things work. Regret forces him to live in the realm of blame because of the consequences of his failure. Grace has no blame and therefore no regret. Grace can rest in hope. God gives a new thing. Mercy is new every morning.
The natural man sees broken and fixed. The spiritual man sees new and old.
Our soul craves wholeness and connection. Grace, mercy and love give us all that our soul craves. Will we embrace this new thing or try to fix the old one?
Jesus is the new thing. Without Him we are stuck with the old. It follows us into the new day because of the broken nature of the fall.
God sees everything in creation as disposable but the human soul. His redemption is in newness. His Word is eternal and settled in Heaven. Eternal things are not disposable. Relationships based on eternal things are not disposable. Relationships based on disposable things will one day dissolve.
God has no regret. No darkness is in Him. He is full of holiness and justice. Grace justifies the ungodly.
"But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." - Romans 4:5 KJV
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:" - Romans 5:1 KJV
Without mercy the old follows us into the new day. Mercy creates a cocoon of safety that is free from the pressures of the old. Ever notice that when you are with a 'mercy person' how easy it is to be with them?
If God leaves some broken things in our lives... and He does. They are not there to be fixed. They create channels for God to pour love His love into the world. Our new wine bottles can hold His love without bursting. We can pour it out into relationships and circumstances. It only makes room for more to be poured into our newness that mercy has enabled.
"No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, 'Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?' He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, 'Is there not a lie in my right hand?' " - Isaiah 44:19-20 ESV
The lie that we approve of is held tightly in the right hand of our approval and we feed on the ashes. Those ashes could come from yesterdays burnt offering, yesterday's provision or a dream that went up in smoke.
The right hand must be kept free to grasp what is new. Fix the old or worship God with open raised hands in newness? Make a choice.
If we are not moved to release our hold on the broken things then God has His methods in place to convince us... the prodigal Son... Martha and Mary after Lazarus died... Peter going fishing after the crucifixion... all are examples of this concept.
Living in constant regret sets us down a hard path.
At first we won't let go and then after a while we can't let go. God helps us but it is a struggle where we fight against the One who is saving us from drowning.
Worship can open our hands... fasting can also... but I think this process is very personal. We must seek God and find the way to keep our hands free. One thing is for sure.. it will require us to operate in faith.
If we don't let go we will eat some tasteless spiritual meals and grow lean due to lack of nurition. Then comes the famine, drought or a whale that swallows us up as we are running... long nights with no fish in our net... boyfriend after boyfriend... movie after movie... meal after meal... weekend after weekend. Our fist closed tight we can not carry much. We can not approve of much anymore. Soon we shake our fist at people, ourselves and eventually at Heaven. We assign blame.
"Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny." - Matthew 5:25-26 ESV
In this area the Spirit of Grace becomes our adversary. Faith becomes our place of agreement. Action by faith becomes the way we exercise faith. In unique ways God continues to stretches out His hand to give us a new provision. It might be a job or a friend, a thing to be involved in, a crisis where we must make a choice. A new opportunity to derive our identity from Christ in the Finished Work. Mercy that we don't deserve. It is too narrow a place to bring what we are carrying. We may drop important things to keep the lie but we must drop something...we might spend days, weeks or years dropping irreplaceable things but God does it again and again... shaking the shakable and making us drop something.
If we don't know grace this can go on and on.
"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ" - Titus 2:11-13 NKJV
If our heart is established in grace or is actively being established then grace does something quite amazing. It highlights the important things as important. It reveals the eternal non-disposable things. The choice of what to take through the narrow place becomes clearer until one day our hand is open again and we find the thing we held so closely for so long is gone. In awe we come to ourselves. We are not quite sure where it went. It has dissolved because that is what temporal things do... they dissolve.
We are broken in different ways. Some visible to us, some visible to others and some only visible to God. Love won't fix our old marriage it will create a new one with the same two people again and again and again. It won't fix our past it just gives us a new present and future that has no past but only what was eternal will remain. The wood, hay and stubble are soon gone and only the gold, silver and precious stones remain.
Cast your regret and every other care upon God. He will never regret caring for you. His gifts have only just begun. His redemption is real and powerful.
"But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD." - Jonah 2:9 KJV
That means it is His job.
We walk by faith. Learning but not regretting. Ceasing from the labor of trying to discover the problem and fix it so that next time we have a better outcome. Walking by faith is the better outcome. The new thing is the solution for tomorrow's problem. The mercy will be there and the transformation that comes from beholding Christ in the situation is what develops maturity for our future situations.

We walk by faith. Learning but not regretting. Ceasing from the labor of trying to discover the problem and fix it so that next time we have a better outcome. Walking by faith is the better outcome. The new thing is the solution for tomorrow's problem. The mercy will be there and the transformation that comes from beholding Christ in the situation is what develops maturity for our future situations.
