This is a passage I have meditated on a great deal over the years...
"Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the LORD? He sees many things, but does not observe them; his ears are open, but he does not hear." - Isaiah 42:19-20 ESV
'Dedicated one' is shalam (Strong's H7999) and it is a personification of the great word SHALOM which means peace, health and national tranquillity.
We live in a time where observation and sensitivity are prescribed and valued highly and closed-minded thinking is vilified and thought to be backward and contrary to progress.
This passage isn't promoting closed-mindedness. It is promoting a kind of singleminded blindness.
Jesus personified the above passage and He was and Is the most compassionate man that ever lived.
Grace is blind to people's faults but it isn't a naive blindness. The gracious person 'sees many things but does not observe them' because there is a higher favor that is given. Jesus clothes men and women in His righteousness but that garment is not visible to those that hear and see.
I was blinded once temporarily and for a week I had to wear patches over both eyes. It was very enlightening. My roommates brought me to classes and helped me.
I want to call on that experience and use it. I want to rely on God to lead me and not see what the world around me is shouting at me to see. I want to be blind and deaf but looking and listening for God's voice and cues. Living now not looking for later. Acting now and not regretting the past.
The world isn't going to tell us this. Our flesh will want more to see and more information that gives it power. The accuser will demand we look at the issues and shortfalls of ourselves and others.
Let's be blind in this way and be at peace with God today.

Hear First And See Later
"Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples. I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion." - Isaiah 8:16-18 ESV
"He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!" - Psalm 107:20-21 ESV
"And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified." - Acts 20:32 ESV
God hides His face but sends His word. Jacob was and is a deceiver. He lies to get by. He lies to others and to himself. God hides his face from Jacob and sends words.
Grace words heal. Grace word produce a place of honesty in an otherwise deceptive or foolish person that hides behind fiction and fanciful notions to survive in a harsh world.
God send His word to heal and wants to bind up that word in his disciples (learners associated with a specific teacher or teaching) so that they will become the signs and portents in their circles of influence. His disciples don't have to be perfect people. They are people that have teaching and apply that teaching. They function in humility, mercy and love. They survive hard times. They are generous. They talk about grace and do not condemn themselves... or at least not for very long because the teaching is bound to them and love constrains them.
God will hide His face from people. They will say, 'I don't see what you see.' and we can say, 'Well. I'll tell you what I heard that opened my eyes and if you listen these words of grace can heal your vision.'
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." - John 3:16-18 ESV

Blind Spots
Blind spots are interesting things. The effects of them are seen but the cause is not seen. Those effects can be frustrating because lack of sensory input makes it impossible to anticipate or avoid what is hidden from us using our vision.
Not only do our senses have blind, numb, silent, tasteless and odorless spots but our perception as a whole has them. Our feelings have them. They can be natural limitations or they can be caused by trauma.
Not to play into stereotypes but a woman might ask a man how he feels about something and get a blank stare in return. That man may have to turn his head in order to see into the place where that blind spot is in order to see his feelings on the subject. They are there but not in view. Some folks are to stubborn and stiff necked to ever turn their head to see anything but what they are focused on.
"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." - Romans 10:17 ESV
The 'word' in that sentence is Rhema. The Rhema of Christ gives us something that we were blind to before. If it were Logos it would be education but it is the illumination of understanding that comes from a perspective that we could never turn our head far enough to see.
Our spiritual ears give information that our eyes and other senses are blind to perceiving.
"Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see! Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the LORD? The LORD was pleased, for his righteousness' sake, to magnify his law and make it glorious." - Isaiah 42:18-21 ESV
Jesus came into the world very aware of the blindness and deafness of His humanity. He was Spirit led. His Father's Words did not just aid His eyes. His Father's Words were His eyes.
A Rhema of grace accompanies the Rhema of Christ. The Bible is one dimensional and two dimensional at best without the illumination of grace. Grace opens up God's character and makes Him accessible. It reveals God's motives even if the details of His plan remain hidden from us.
"Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face." - Job 13:15 ESV
Many quote this verse but it reveals a man with blind spots. Here is a person groping to trust in God's mercy but unable to let go of His own arguments because grace has not penetrated that area of His thinking.
"Then Job answered the LORD and said: 'I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. "Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?" Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. "Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me." I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.' " - Job 42:1-6 ESV
Grace shatters our old perceptions in their rigidness of duty and moral strength and gives us new humble ears.
"He who has ears to hear, let him hear." - Matthew 11:15 ESV
This is the place where some would say that God gives power to overcome our personal blind spots and we get victory over every wound that has ever caused us to have sensory deficits but I'm not going to say that. This is not a prosperity message. That is a road that leads to mania, self delusion and disappointment. The men who shout prosperity the loudest are the ones who want it the most but do not have it yet and are hoping that it will change if they speak louder.
God in His sovereignty may speak details that supplement our self perception like a coach does. The Spirit is our comforter and counselor. His purpose is not self illumination or empowerment. He makes us alive so we can be alive and fellowship with the Trinity.
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." - John 14:26 ESV
Instead of sharpening our blurry focus He is going the turn our spiritual heads to look in the direction we would not look in before and become our vision. Like Moses turning aside from his shepherding tasks to examine a burning bush that is not consumed we are turned aside by the wonder of grace to hear God's voice call us and send us on a redemptive mission. God heard Moses when he pointed out his own limitations. God knew all about it and sent him anyway as a limited man. Moses outgrew some of those things and others he carried to the grave but those limitations became small things in comparison to the great deliverance at hand.
Today we can hear the voice of God and let grace turn our heads to explore what we can not see and function in that eternal perspective. If God wants to change something that Is His business not ours. Grace has shut our mouths and given us ears to hear.

Blind Eyes Will See
Reading John chapter 5 this morning and I'm seeing grace all through this chapter. God is revealing Himself and yet mankind is blinded and needs to have a way to see God. Jesus becomes the way that mankind can be saved.
We all naturally look in the wrong places.
"The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working.'
This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
'Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 'I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.
You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.
And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. I do not receive glory from people. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?' " John 5:15-47 ESV
As I read this I hear something amazing. It is not people talking to me or me devising or discovering something using intellect. If we are quiet we can listen and become aware of something.
Naturally we look at people and search for qualities and listen for words hoping to find something that can only be found in God. Just as Jesus never sinned He also never presented glory as a man presents it. He lived in ultimate humility... He always glorified the Father. It is because of that reason that we as blind people now have an opportunity to see and hear God.
Let's not be fooled by goodness or by skillful communication. Only God is good and it is only by seeing Christ that we see God. Without Christ the Father is inaccessible. The Father has made Christ accessible so that 'whosoever will' would have access.
I sit musing about the life of Christ. Like a mental picture book I flip through the pages of miracles and picture Jesus' kind face as he walks and talks. I see His life and His death... His words on a cross... His last exhaled breath... now He Is risen and appearing to men and women... He shows His hands to Thomas and meets Peter and the others fishing by the lake... then up, up, up He goes... through sky and past stars to have a reunion in Heaven... what melodies must have proceeded from the mouths of angels as He made His entrance into Heaven... what Joy unspeakable as He sat down at the right hand of the Father... my imagination stretches to imagine the unimaginable...
"So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God." Mark 16:19 ESV
"Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing." Acts 2:33 ESV
We would never see God if Christ had not poured out what He did.
Even now there is vision if we let Him open our eyes. We can hear if we keenly listen to hear what Jesus says. We will hear grace in His voice and no other voice will give off that sound. A kind voice alone can not impart hope... I powerful voice alone still only has the authority of the power it can muster itself.
By Jesus we hear the Father. By the Spirit we hear Jesus. We listen today God. Let our hearts be quiet... we turn our eyes to the author and finisher of our faith. We value Your Words above all naturally necessary things.
When Grace has been revealed we picture a smile as You look at us God. That smile lets us face the day.

The Christmas Lights
We are blinded by our own humanity.
" 'And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye." Matt 7:3-5 NKJV
It is the wooden nature of our soul that gets in the way. Even our desire to help our fellow man is called hypocrisy by Christ when we are blinded. When the elements of the soul are all we have then we can not even begin to help others. Our mind, will, emotions, consciousness of self and conscience just get in the way. What we think and feel; who we think we are and the decisions we make; our code of conduct... these are all we have if we do not have God. No wonder God seems invisible to a world that is blinded by it's own humanity.
Man wants to help his fellow man but only makes things worse left to himself. The blind leading the blind all fall into the very next ditch.
Maybe I say this because Christmas is over and many will pack Jesus up and put Him away with the rest of the Christmas decorations. Without Him all we are left with is ourselves.
"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." 2 Cor 3:18 NKJV
I wants the Christmas lights to reflect in my eyes all year long. He is my identity now. When who He is and what He has done is my frame of reference I am not blind. The Spirit who brings this to me also reveals it in me and through me. This love has no hypocrisy and is not self oriented at all.
People all over the world have things in their eyes that the can't get out. It blurs their vision and causes them pain... we want to help. That dirt must be washed away by living water. Christ has that water.
Freedom from self is what we all need. It is what Christ has done for us and what we can live in today. Let everything else fade from view. I want to see Jesus today and have a willingness to shrug off any distraction from His glorious nature and work. I am no service to anyone blinded by self.

"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." 2 Cor 3:18 NKJV
I wants the Christmas lights to reflect in my eyes all year long. He is my identity now. When who He is and what He has done is my frame of reference I am not blind. The Spirit who brings this to me also reveals it in me and through me. This love has no hypocrisy and is not self oriented at all.
People all over the world have things in their eyes that the can't get out. It blurs their vision and causes them pain... we want to help. That dirt must be washed away by living water. Christ has that water.
Freedom from self is what we all need. It is what Christ has done for us and what we can live in today. Let everything else fade from view. I want to see Jesus today and have a willingness to shrug off any distraction from His glorious nature and work. I am no service to anyone blinded by self.
